Jackson's Attractions & Convenient Links

Jackson's Attractions & Convenient Links....

Jackson is booming!  It is the heart of West Tennessee. . .and will offer you just what you need on a relaxing break.

The retail concentration in Jackson can boggle the mind and empty the pocketbook, all at the same time.

But you may prefer a simple tour of downtown, just a couple of blocks from our front door.

Historically, see the sign marking the site where David Crockett, after losing the election to send him back to Washington, D.C., told us, "You can go to Hell, but I am going to Texas." And one of our favorite areas is the East Main Street district where a number of families have invested their time, energy and bank accounts to restore the elaborate Victorian homes there.   Stop at the park at the beginning of the restoration area, just over the railroad tracks, where historical markers point to where General Grant and his troops rested a while ago on the way to Shiloh.

Stop in the Railroad Museum just down from Main Street on Royal Street.  Terrific model railroad layout of the formal hub at Jackson.

Then go up Royal Street to the former Marathon automobile factory.  Directly across the street is the Southern Boiler Company where planned redevelopment is in motion for these historic buildings and the area around them to house a museum, service and creative businesses, and retail shops.

Best yet. . .see Jackson's truly astonishing downtown grow with exciting new attractions.  There are three galleries,  Art Under a Hot Tin Roof, run by Kat and Lorne Semrau, where you'll gaze at fresh, modern art in a variety of media by truly exceptional artists.  You might even be able to study a Rembrandt, Picasso or Chagall while you're there picking out a necklace or display pot.  Next door, Rachel Dickson's Dickson Gallery of Fine Arrt  offers a wonderful presentation emphasizing  affordable regional and local artists.  Just around the corner over in the restored "Southern Hotel" building is Alicia McEarl's Marguerite's which claims -- and rightfully so! -- to be "more than just an art gallery"!  She has also opened a magical Artopia Center full of stained glass, pottery, clothes and much more on Royal across from the RR station museum.

Then go around a corner or two for refreshment at the hometown Dixie Castle, the Baker's Rack, a sandwich shop, or stop to enjoy a glass of wine or bottle of beer at the Downtown Tavern.

Speaking of local food, there is a delightful Thai Cafe just up the street, the Catfish Cabin just down the street, and the new Candola Cafe located within the new Artopia arts center.

Here's some links to explore when you want to know more about Jackson, things to do here, and when they happen.

Interested in finding some good B&Bs in other areas?  Here are links to our associations.  And, for a look at B&Bs in other parts of our country or, for that matter, the world, we have listed a couple of good directories for your convenience.
